I noticed something sort of interesting. As you may (or may not) know, one of my major pet peeves is the wave of victimization frenzy that has swept the nation. It seems that every week the country has found yet another wonderful new thing to worry about.
On 9/11 the first estimates of fatalities were in the tens of thousands. In the earthquake in China last week, initial estimates were in the hundreds.
So, we have a capitalist country that overestimated their losses and a communist country that way underestimated them. Think about what this could mean. More importantly, China’s attitude seems to be “Shit happens. Let’s rebuild this mofo and get on with it”. You will not be seeing souvenirs of pandas shedding a tear with the text “We will never forget” underneath it. They have better things to do, it seems.
I mean, come on. When I first heard the news about 9/11, my first thought was “Oh crap!” but then my immediate second one was “This is going to end up as a shitload of bad made-for-TV movies”. And, of course, that happened.
